Toen ik voor het eerst in deze klassieker reed moest ik aan vroeger denken.
Een Zwitserse arts in het kleine skidorpje - waar ik leerde skiën - reed in een Jimmy. Als ik naast de auto stond, was de motorkap op hoofdhoogte. Ik kon m’n ogen er niet vanaf houden.
De GMC - een originele roestvrije Jimmy 4X4 - is ondergewaardeerd en ze beginnen heel schaars te worden, ook in de USA. Voor mij was dit een reden te meer om de 3 jarenlange restauratie in te zetten.
Tijdens de pandemie noemde ik deze auto glimlachend Corona-proof, omdat je zo ver uit elkaar zit (het lijkt wel anderhalve meter!), wat een ruimte! Ergens ver boven je begeeft zich de stalen hemel, die in de eindeloos diepe kleur van de auto is gespoten. Eerst heb ik het technische gedeelte van de auto aangepakt, alles wat de auto remt en tot stilstand brengt is nagekeken, gereviseerd of hersteld. Ik heb een uitlaat met lange dempers op maat laten maken om de auto mooi stil en comfortabel te krijgen. Hij zoeft over de wegen. Als je voor de ruisende auto staat, hoor je de motor nauwelijks, maar loop je naar achteren, dan hoor je uit de uitlaat de machineslagen van de V8 in regelmaat, dat typische zachte, diepe geluid.

Ik heb een set met de originele Rally-Wheels gezocht en gemonteerd. De grove banden zijn in de originele maat waar de auto mee geleverd is, dit rijdt het best. De carrosserie van de auto is volledig uit elkaar geweest en van binnen en buiten nieuw gespoten in zee lichtblauw/ groen. De hardtop is ook bij de auto en die heb ik bekleed met beige Skai met mooie stiknaden. De kleurschakeringen van de auto maken de auto heel klassiek en sta je naast de auto dan valt je mond open van de grote stalen vlakken – perfect gespoten in de diep lichtblauwe groene kleur.
Alle onderdelen die ik erop heb gezet, zijn verchroomd of van roestvrij staal, zoals bijvoorbeeld de buitenspiegels. Die accessores zijn echte eye-catchers, mooi in zijn eenvoud. Er komen geen strips of andere vlakken op de auto, het lijnenspel van de auto is negatief naar voren ontworpen. Dat ziet er heel krachtig uit en dit belangrijke detail wil ik niet verstoren. Kom hem in het echt bekijken, en ervaar met je eigen zintuigen dit Amerikaanse gevoel.
Het is nu augustus 2024. Na 3 jaar denken, verzamelen en werken is de Jimmy zo goed als klaar en gaat het nu om de afwerking van de details, zoals een piepje, een kraakje, schoonmaken en detailen. Technisch is de auto perfect, de motor loopt erg goed, de versnellingsbak schakelt zijdezacht en als je gas geeft rij je zonder enige trilling in een streep naar de 150 km per uur.
De restauratie van deze indrukwekkende 4x4 is goed gelukt, hij ziet er origineel en verzorgd uit.
De kleuren en afwerking zijn fantastisch. Een sympathieke topatleet en wie weet "part of the family".

When I drove this classic for the first time I was reminded of the past. A Swiss doctor in the small ski village - where I learned to ski - drove a Jimmy. When I stood next to the car, the hood was at head height. I couldn't take my eyes off it. The GMC - an original rust-free Jimmy 4X4 - is undervalued and they are starting to become very scarce, also in the USA. For me, this was one more reason to start the 3-year restoration. During the pandemic I smilingly called this car Corona-proof, because you sit so far apart, what a space! Somewhere far above you is the steel headliner, which is painted in the endlessly deep color of the car. First I tackled the technical part of the car, everything that brakes and stops the car has been checked, overhauled or repaired. I had an exhaust with long mufflers custom made to make the car nice and quiet and comfortable. He zooms over the roads. If you stand in front of the car, you can hardly hear the engine, but if you walk towards the back, you hear the engine blows of the V8 regularly from the exhaust, that typical soft, deep sound. I looked for and installed a set with the original Rally Wheels. The coarse tires are in the original size that the car was delivered with, this drives best. The body of the car has been completely dismantled and repainted inside and out in sea light blue/green. The hardtop is also with the car and I covered it with beige Skai with beautiful stitching. The color shades of the car make the car very classic and when you stand next to the car your jaw drops at the large steel surfaces - perfectly painted in the deep light blue green color. All the parts I put on it are chrome-plated or made of stainless steel, such as the exterior mirrors. These accessories are real eye-catchers, beautiful in their simplicity. There will be no strips or other surfaces on the car, the lines of the car are designed negatively forward. That looks very powerful and I don't want to disturb this important detail. Come see it in real life and experience this American feeling with your own senses. It is now August 2024. After 3 years of thinking, collecting and working, the Jimmy is as good as finished and it is now about finishing the details, such as a squeak, a creak, cleaning and detailing. Technically the car is perfect, the engine runs very well, the gearbox shifts silky smooth and when you accelerate you drive straight to 150 km per hour without any vibration. The restoration of this impressive 4x4 was a success, it looks original and well cared for. The colors and finish are fantastic. A likeable top athlete and who knows, "part of the family".
